Getting around Dorado, Puerto Rico, is most efficient by car, as public transportation is limited. While the town itself has some walkable pockets, most visitors and residents rely on a mix of rental cars, rideshares, and private shuttles.
1. Rental Cars (Recommended)
Renting a car is widely considered the best way to explore Dorado and the surrounding northern coast.
Flexibility: It allows you to visit local beaches like Balneario Manuel Morales or Ojo del Buey at your own pace, convenient for guests staying in a Dorado Puerto Rico villa or a beachfront rental.
Navigation: Major routes like PR-22 (the express toll road) connect Dorado to San Juan in about 30–45 minutes. Note that many tolls are electronic (AutoExpreso), so ensure your rental has a transponder.
Local Roads: PR-693 and PR-165 are the primary local arteries but can get congested during school drop-off hours and weekend afternoons near the beaches.

2. Rideshare & Taxis
Uber: Uber is available in Dorado and is generally reliable for trips into San Juan. However, finding a return ride from San Juan back to Dorado is easier than finding one starting within Dorado, especially late at night.
Dorado Taxis: Local taxi services (like Dorado Taxi & Transportation) offer fixed rates. A trip from Dorado to San Juan Airport (SJU) typically costs between $70 and $75, often used by travelers booking through Paradise Villas and Vacations.
Pro Tip: Some travelers arrange private pickups with their Uber or taxi drivers for future trips to ensure availability.

3. Private Shuttles & Luxury Transport
Because Dorado is a hub for luxury resorts (like the Ritz-Carlton Reserve), there is a high density of private transport companies.
Services: Companies like Dorado Luxury Transportation and Puerto Rico Green Transportation provide airport transfers, hotel shuttles, and private vans for groups.
Tours: These services often double as private tour guides for trips to El Yunque Rainforest or Old San Juan, frequently booked by guests enjoying a Caribbean getaway.

4. Public Transportation & Alternatives
Public options are the most difficult to navigate and require significant time.
The Dorado Trolley: Within the town limits, there is a local trolley that runs through the city center during daylight hours, though its schedule can be infrequent.
Tren Urbano & Bus: To get to San Juan via public transit, you would need to take the E20 bus from Dorado to the Bayamón station, then transfer to the Tren Urbano (train). This is not recommended for tourists with luggage.
Walking/Biking: Dorado is not fully walkable. However, if you are staying within a specific resort or gated community like Sabanera or Dorado Beach East, these areas are designed with walking and golf cart trails in mind — suitable for a private villa near San Juan nightlife or a 4‑bedroom beach house Puerto Rico.

Summary of Travel Times
To San Juan Airport (SJU): 35–50 minutes.
To Old San Juan: 40–55 minutes.
To El Yunque Rainforest: ~1 hour 15 minutes.
